Victim Rights
Title 24 Colorado's Revised Statute 24-4.1-301sets forth the rights for victims and witnesses of certain crimes. Victims are entitled to be treated with fairness, dignity, respect, and free from intimidation, harassment or abuse, throughout the criminal justice process*.
Although these rights are specific to felony crimes against persons, the awareness of domestic violence victim treatment by system-based agencies is a consideration of these agencies when developing policy, regardless of the level of the violation.
Most Project Safeguard clients come to us with domestic violence issues associated to civil proceedings:
- Protection Orders;
- Dissolution of Marriage; and
- Allocation of Parental Responsibility.
These situations are not covered by the Victim Rights Act, however, because we know that there is so much cross over between civil and criminal issues relating to domestic violence, we have developed relationships with law enforcement and the judiciary enabling us to bridge the needs of our clients.
*For complete list of victim rights see Colorado Revised Statutes Title 24, 24-4.1-301. For further information contact the Colorado Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Justice, your local law enforcement victim assistance program, or the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance.
